Summary: Topic - Creating a Security Awareness Program One of the most challenging parts of information security is the human element. Complex, multi-layered network protections can all too easily be rendered moot by employees who click links in pop-up windows, leave their passwords in plain sight, or fall prey to social engineering attacks. An active security awareness program can help reduce many risks that cannot be addressed through security software and hardware. The Premera family of companies consists of roughly 3500 associates located over four western states. Working in a highly regulated industry and responsible for extremely sensitive information about its members, Premera takes information security seriously, and set out in 2004 to create a robust program for educating employees and contractors about security risks and good security practices. This presentation provides an overview of Premera's comprehensive security awareness program, with a focus on its less formal, more creative aspects, particularly the annual Computer Security Day events. About the Speaker: Carolyn Pearson - Senior Communications Analyst at Premera Blue Cross Carolyn Pearson (CISSP, GSEC, GSPA) is the Senior Communications Analyst for the Information Systems Security department at Premera Blue Cross. Prior to joining Premera in 2001, she held a variety of technical writing, editing and webmaster positions that had nothing whatsoever to do with information security, and considers herself proof positive that you don't need any particular background or experience to create an effective security awareness program. [Premera Blue Cross is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.] Top CISA and CISM Exam Dates Here is an overview of upcoming CISA and CISM exams.
